Merry Christmas!

We had our "annual" family Christmas celebration this past weekend. Santa was REALLY good to us again, Scott and I came home with a ton of presents.
Highlights of the weekend:
*Seeing the family...always a good time...and doesn't happen often enough
*Meeting Andy's new girlfriend
*Cooking with my mom...once again always a good time, and doesn't happen often enough
*Seeing everyone open their gifts, Scott & I put a lot of thought into them, so it's nice to see everyone enjoy them.
*Playing with Brody...always a ton of fun
*And of course...our annual Christmas picture...this year there's some extra people! :-) But that's a good thing.

Annoying driving habits

Here's an article I found on MSN. By Tom Wilson of MSN autos

It COMPLETELY describes how I feel when I travel!! :-)

1. Learn to Merge
Sauntering to the end of a really long freeway onramp at 52 mph, confirming that all those cars and trucks swerving in avoidance are going 75 mph as you pull into a traffic lane, then accelerating to 80 mph two minutes later torques everyone off for three miles behind you. Traffic already on the freeway has the right of way and it's your duty to merge seamlessly with it. If you're not going freeway speed by the bottom of the onramp then step on the gas. Most importantly of all, train yourself to look over your left shoulder while accelerating on the ramp so you can pick your target merge point. And don't blame me if I don't move over for you; I'm busy and fitting in is your job. I have the right of way, jackass!

2. The Gaping Fool
If you have a hankering to see a wrecked car, then take a beer and a lawn chair to a junkyard and pass a lazy afternoon contemplating the near-infinite combinations of wrinkled sheet metal. Revel in the mathematic complexities of shattered glass; compute the force vectors written irrevocably in all that carnage. But brother, don't balk me with your rube's need to stare during the morning commute. Look, if you're going to pull over and assist, great. If you're picking your way through broken glass, we understand. But jamming traffic for five miles because of some dark need to gawk at a fender-bender is a hanging offense. Instead of rubbernecking at the wreck site, look for the escape route around and away from it. If you have passengers, they can stare for you and give a detailed report.

3. Get High on the Beams
Thanks to the near-total urbanization of most American's driving experience, we've come to a collective inability to use high beams properly. As a result, any rural native can spot the dark-night newbies; they're the ones groveling along blessedly uncongested county highways with their low beams on. Sniffing their way home from bingo night at 32 mph in a 55 zone, these incompetents are another unnecessary hazard to navigation. If you can't be bothered to either remember that every vehicle has been equipped with high beam headlights since before Humphrey Bogart was getting whistling lessons from Lauren Bacall in the 1944 film To Have and Have Not, or are too lazy to use those high beams, then you simply aren't participating in society. This is the sort of lazy ignorance that begets risky passes and menacing tailgating.
Most telling, slovenly low-beam-only operation proves that the occupant behind the wheel isn't looking even 80 feet ahead, the cardinal sin of all. It doesn't take more than a flip of the fingers to swap the headlights up or down. The instant traffic passes those high beams should be on, illuminating well down the road and giving the eyes an easier time adapting to the lack of glare. An instant before oncoming traffic rounds the bend or crests the hill, another finger flick puts the low beams back on. It's really easy folks.

4. Jackrabbit Smarts
I'm frustrated to no end by people who have internalized all that hogwash to avoid jackrabbit starts. They crawl away from signals and stop signs as if each foot traveled has a ten dollar toll attached to it, ignorant of the fact that creeping to speed wastes not only fuel, but also bottles up traffic behind them. Learn this truth: Engines are most efficient when operating at or nearly at full throttle. Otherwise, a moderate, steady pace is best. So it's more efficient to power up to speed relatively quickly, then back off the throttle and cruise at a steady speed.

5. Mystery Brakers
Just asking, but what's up with these inexplicable brake applications in the middle of straightaways? Did you just remember the cat is still in the dryer? See your high school flame pass in the opposite direction? Wake up and realize you were driving? The mystery is baffling. All I know is that it seems people aren't paying attention and then get startled back into focus, so they apply the brakes. Focus on driving when you're behind the wheel, not the other things that are happening in your life. You might live longer and worry less.

6. Lights On, No One Home
Every morning I wake up hoping tonight I'll be blinded for 10 minutes by the headlights of a parked car. Really, is it such an intellectual connection to understand that parking lights are for, uh, parking? That headlights blaring uselessly and dangerously into oncoming traffic are needless hazards? Turn them off when you are parked.

7. Rolling Your Own
You don't know him, but curmudgeon extraordinaire Steve Statham, the editor of Musclecar Enthusiast magazine, once growled about "making up your own driving rules as you go along." This after another excruciating round of, "Oh no, you go first, oh no, you go first" at the local four-way stop with an indecisive motorist.
Really, which is more courteous, recalling and applying such driving law basics as the car on the right has the right of way, or displaying a pigheaded devotion to ensuring everyone else goes first? There's already a whole body of law dedicated to the orderly flow of traffic and we'll all get there sooner if we didn't hold these crossroad coffee klatches.

8. Pull In Front of Me, Will You?
Why is it so many tin pots play that infantile, "I don't see you" bit when two lanes of traffic merge in crawling rush hour traffic? They keep their nose glued to the guy in front, avoid all eye contact and like three year olds wish you'd simply go away.
Oh, please. Is your life so devoid of success that you need to impose your will on another driver stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic? A lane has ended, the people next door are going to merge into your lane, hopefully every other car at a time. Deal with it.

9. Herd Instinct
Here's an idea: Let's all get in our cars, jump onto the freeway and bunch together in packs in the left lanes. It'll be fun and we'll barely have to maintain consciousness because we can just follow the guy in front of us.
If this sounds stupid, it is. But that seems to be the norm on interstates all across this country. Cars pile up like logs at the mill because the guy in front is texting his dog groomer and the strokes behind him put their brains out to pasture 10 miles ago.
If your path is blocked, do something about it. Given today's clogged freeways often you can't, and then we're told patience is a virtue (code phrase for hopeless). But just as often, looking ahead and plotting a careful lane change will smoothly avoid such mindless wandering.

10. All the Rest
I've left out a veritable hall of fame of daily irritants and driving clichés. Juvenile thumping stereos, unused turn signals, shaving, reading, make-up application, eating while underway, cell phone idylls, weaving, drunks, 64 mph in residential areas, not pulling over for faster traffic — the list is endless. You know, you don't have to smile, and I sure don't want to exchange addresses with you, but if we'd all just keep our minds on what we're doing — that's driving — it would help.

1st time cooking a turkey

So for Thanksgiving Scott and I decided to invite everyone over to our apartment. We knew that it would be a little cramped, since our place isn't that big...but we figured what the heck...let's try it.

The flowers came from Kyra--how pretty are they?!?!!?

I think things turned out very well! I didn't burn the turkey...and all the sides were made in enough time that they could be eaten with dinner! The only problem--that Scott and I had enough leftovers to feed an army!

Go Bucks

This weekend more than one hundred thousand people will crowd into the Horsehoe, including my best friend and my husband. (not together, they are just both attending the game) Yeah the game is a big rivalry between the Buckeyes and the Wolverines, but what does it mean to me? NOT MUCH! Okay, I'm a Buckeye fan, but frankly I've got more important things to do that freeze my you-know-what-off at a 4 hour football game. I went to Kent State, which lies at the bottom of the "snow belt"...been there done that WAY too many times.
So, while 100k+ will be rooting on the Buckeyes...I think I'll be working on my Thanksgiving day menu.

GO BUCKS...I hope you win, cause otherwise people will be pretty mad come Monday.

New car

The economy isn't doing so well...loans are scarce...money is tight.

So what do I do?

I bought a new car.

Used actually...it's a 2008 Saturn Aura XR...and I LOVE it!

Scorpio Tidbits

Saw this on MSN, thought it was a pretty accurate picture of myself...since I am a Scorpio.

Beneath a controlled, cool exterior beats the heart of the deeply intense Scorpio. Passionate, penetrating, and determined, this sign will probe until they reach the truth. The Scorpio may not speak volumes or show emotions readily, yet rest assured there's an enormous amount of activity happening beneath the surface. Excellent leaders, Scorpions are always aware. When it comes to resourcefulness, this sign comes out ahead.

Friends and Family

Sincerity and truth are strong components of the Scorpio's friends. It can take some time before really close bonds are formed, but once done, the Scorpio will remain dedicated and loyal. Witty and intellectual, they prefer companions who are humorous and easygoing. Full of surprises, this sign will give you the shirt off their backs if that's what you need, yet once they are crossed, there's no turning back. They feel deeply, and once hurt, it can be impossible to turn things around. Commitment to family is strong and consistent with the Scorpio. They are exceptionally helpful in managing affairs, and they are excellent advocates when needed.

Career and Money

I desire is the key phrase for the Scorpio. They are fantastic at managing, solving, or creating. Once the Scorpio sets their sights on a goal, there's no deterring this sign. Tasks that require a scientific, penetrating approach are always best done by Scorpions as they will delve deeply into the materials they have. Their ability to focus coupled with determination makes for strong management skills. They're not ones to worry about making friends on the job scene; rather, they prefer to see the task accomplished well. Pursuing such careers as scientist, doctor, investigator, navigator, detective, researcher, police officer, business manager, and psychologist all suit the mighty Scorpio. Respect is an essential aspect of working for this sign. They need to respect their coworkers while also feeling a sense of being respected by others. Scorpions are disciplined enough to stick to a budget and unafraid of working as hard and as long as it takes to get themselves in a good financial position. Many are fortunate and inherit money. Whatever the case - and regardless of the balance - they are great managers of their dollars and are not apt to overspend. Money means security and a sense of control, which is important to the Scorpio. Therefore, they're going to hang onto the majority of the cash, making decisions carefully before turning any of it over.

Love and Sex

This is the strongest of the sexualities in the Zodiac. Incredibly passionate, the Scorpio takes intimacy seriously. Partners need to be intelligent and honest. Much of the foreplay for this sign happens long before the bedroom through conversation and observation. Once in love, they are devoted and loyal to the death. But relationships can take some time. The Scorpio needs to build trust and respect for a potential mate slowly and thoroughly.

SCORPIO TIDBITS

The Perfect GiftThe best gifts for a Scorpio are sentimental choices, clothing (especially something sexy), and non-fiction books.
Likes truth, facts, being right, teasing, longtime friends, a grand passion, a worthy adversary

Anniversary

It's now 1:30 in the afternoon and I'm sitting here thinking about what I was doing 1 year ago today. At this point I was scarfing down lunch in the back room of St. Tim's, chatting with all my bridesmaids and my mom, and about to get into my wedding dress.

What a year it has been! I feel like it has gone INCREDIBLY fast, but I can still remember every detail of this day a year ago.

Highlights include:
*Laughing with Kyra about the smell of the Tide pen I used to get rid of the lipstick stain on my veil (they smell horrible!)
*Laughing my head off as Kyra ran back into the church after she forgot to bring in Scott's ring! It was a good handoff, because I forgot to give my engagement ring to my sister to wear!
*Trying not to completely lose it when I walked down the aisle, after I almost tripped over my dress. (My dad helped with that one)
*Seeing Scott in his tux, which I hadn't seen at all before that day
*Wondering if the flowers in my bouquet would make a mark on my dress as I sat with it in my lap during the ceremony.
*Riding in the vette to the reception...we certainly felt cool!!
*Seeing all my friends and family, I love the fact that so many were able to make it to the wedding.
*Of course--getting married and finally becoming husband & wife!

The first year has been great...let's hope all the years to come will be just as good, or better!

Takes me back to my high school days

Over the weekend I went to see my brother perform at a marching band contest. All I can say is WOW...he's good. He really knows his stuff. He didn't miss a beat, and I could tell that other people in the band were looking to him for leadership, even while they were performing the show. I'm so glad that he loves marching band as much as Stephanie and I did. I guess it runs in our blood. Who knows what we are going to do for entertainment once Andy graduates!

Weekend update

Okay, so I survived my dentist appointment...but not without some pain.

Friday was bad...so bad in fact I had to go home from work early. It really killed me to leave in the middle of the day, but I was no good to anybody the way that I felt. I went home slept for a few hours and then felt a little bit better.

The rest of the weekend I've been getting better. I've cut down on the amount of Advil, but I can still tell when it wears off. Hopefully I'll be able to get by without any in the next day or two.

Fixing the tooth that was never there

In just a few hours I am going to be sitting in the dentist office, about to go through what I'm promised is to be a relatively pain free 3.5 hours. Why so long you ask? Well...to fix the tooth that was never there.

I know it sounds strange, how can you fix something if it was never there? You see, my parents genetic codes blessed me with 3 less permanent teeth than the average person. So after losng all my baby teeth and then enduring years of braces, I was left with straight teeth but a few holes to fill in. At 17 years old, that's hardly what you want.

My dentist at the time (who shall remain nameless because 10 years later I'm still too angry to even speak his name) told me and my family that the best way to add in 3 permanent teeth was to go with this new "no metal" bridge. Wow...cool...no grayish tint, no metal, that's neat. I was told this was the way all bridges would be made in the future. We went with it, and he guarenteed they would last at least 10-15 years. Fast forward ten years later, to 2008...and today's dentist appointment will be putting in a new bridge WITH metal, so that I can eat like a normal person. (i've already replaced the other two...out of my own pocket no less) For the last 5 or so years I've dealt with the possibility that the tooth right next to my front one would spontaneously come out. It's not pretty I tell you. When that happens, I look like every stereotype there is about hillbillies. I've had this fear that one small wrong move and I'd be stuck with a hole...usually during a really important time in my life. It's always been a hassle to get it fixed, because then you have to interrupt the dentist appointment schedule, just because you have an emergency.

I've made do, not biting into anything for at least the last 3 years. I'm not starving by any means, but it really does put a cramp in your style when you are forced to use a fork no matter what you are eating. I can't wait for the day that I can take a big bite out of a sandwich with no fear. I'll probably cry when it happens. I know it sounds stupid, but you have no idea the crap I've had to deal with due to the fact that I am in this predicament.

So why wait so long to fix it? Those of you in broadcasting will completely understand this..I HAD NO MONEY! I was working full time but getting paid more like part time. This leaves no extra money for anything, no matter how much you need it. Thanks to the government, and the economic stimulus check that was sent my way, I finally have the means to fix this. It's no surprise that the insurance company will only pay for a small part, they claim this is cosmetic. Yeah...right...cause I asked to have 3 less teeth than everyone else!

Today begins 1 of 2 appointments to put an end to this ridiculous saga. I only hope that I'm able to keep these for at least the next 20-25 years...perhaps by then I'll have the money to pay for them to be replaced if need be.

What have they done to my chocolate!

Say it ain't so!

I'm a huge fan of Hershey chocolate...so I hope this "new" formula doesn't alter the taste too much.

Yep...I'm having one of those days.

The other world

I have to admit, I used to love Walmart. It was the be all end all places to go shopping. Who knew there could be one place you could go buy new towels for the bathroom, pick up your favorite DVD, buy some craft supplies and get your entire grocery list right in the same place. I can't fault them for doing so well...cause their prices are normally that good!

I used to love it, until I moved in right next to it. Sure it's convenient, and I can walk to it, but I swear it's full of aliens.

Case in point, I went in there yesterday to buy some cleaning supplies. All I needed was a new duster, some bathroom cleaner and some Lysol. I swear it took me 20 minutes to wade through all the creepy people standing in the middle of the main aisle. Why must everyone congregate in the middle, and then look at you like you are the stupid one for trying to get through? I think I have this invisible shield when I go into a store...because everyone seems to act like I'm not there. Then I had to pick up some deodorant for my husband (yeah that's love)...and it was a painful thought that I had to cross the ENTIRE store to get to where it was. I must have dodged 4 kids with no shoes or shirts on, 3 women with mullets, 2 couples who decided it was cool to make out in the middle of the aisle...and one woman who actually asked me where the shaving creme was, as if I worked there. Good Grief!

If the prices weren't so great, I would swear off the store altogether...at least the one that's right next to my house. Ugh.

This cracks me up

From the Associated Press:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - The secret at KFC will be out today, sort of. Colonel Harland Sanders' handwritten fried chicken recipe blending those 11 herbs and spices is going to be moved from its
home in a locked file cabinet inside a vault to an undisclosed location. After KFC headquarters in Louisville, Kentucky, modernizes the recipe's permanent hideaway, it will be returned. The recipe has been in the file cabinet for more than 20 years. Ex-New York City police detective Bo Dietl has been hired to protect the recipe, which will be tucked away in a briefcase handcuffed to him when it is whisked away by armored car. The 68-year-old concoction for the colonel's Original Recipe fried chicken is regarded as KFC's crown jewel.

Fun Quote

Quote my dad sent me:

I used to look at the dog and think, “If you were a little smarter, you could tell me what you’re thinking” and he’d look back like he was saying “If you were a little smarter, I wouldn’t have to.

Life in a nutshell

I know, I know...it's been a long time since I've updated. The problem is that I don't feel like I've done anything exciting lately that anyone else would want to read. But here goes....

This past weekend I went to Kings Island with my mom, sister and brother. It was cool to spend the day together. We had a GREAT time, even though it certainly opened my eyes to the fact that I am not 16 anymore! I certainly felt every bit of my age and loved it. :-) I've had some headaches the last few days and I'm sure that it's because my brain was shaken past the point of oblivian. I still maintain that the guy who spun the car Stephanie and I were riding in on the Octopus ride is evil. My eyeballs were spinning back and forth and I almost lost my Cheerios. I was impressed that my mom got on all the roller coasters with us, even though she almost lost it on the Flight of Fear. By the end of the day we were completely beat. We of course had to pose for some funny pictures.
Let me say that I LOVE the Olympics...but it is really screwing up my sleep schedule!! I stayed up to watch Michael Phelps all last week...not to mention the gymnastics competition, diving, beach volleyball you name it. I'm really paying for it this week, trying to keep my eyes open while I'm furiously typing away at work. It's a wonder I can put a complete sentence together.
We got a new fridge....after our old one kept freezing things that weren't supposed to be frozen! It's nice to be in an apartment, cause we didn't have to shell out the money for a new appliance. The new one is a lot bigger, and that makes me happy.
Scott and I are headed to Andy's 1st football game of the season this Friday. I love going to H.S. football games...it's sad that this is the last year we'll have a legitimate reason to go. My grandparents are going to be in town, so it will be nice to see them since I haven't seen them since the wedding. (which was 10 months ago today...whew...how time flies!)
I think that's it...I'll probably have more to share later.

My favorite things

Going off of what Ellie posted on her blog today...I thought I'd add my list of my favorite things

*Seeing my husband!

*Playing with Brody. He's such a cute black lab. Even though he's in Zanesville, I love to see how excited he gets when I walk in the door.

*Scrapbooking with my mom, she is really creative and I love the time we spend together :-)

*Exchanging sarcastic emails with my dad...he's very quick witted. lol

*Talking on the phone with my best friend...2nd only to seeing her in person.

*Sitting on Discovery (my in-laws boat) sipping coffee and watching the roller coasters at Cedar Point

*Pictures...and picture frames. I can't get enough of them!

*Purses. I wish I had more money to buy them. (much to my husband's dismay)

*My grandparents

I think that's it for now...Share yours!

Rush hour

Since I spent 5 years as a vampire, driving into work at weird hours...I'm still new to this whole rush hour thing.
But here's something I've noticed about Columbus drivers.

1. They are inconsistent with their speed.

I don't understand why one minute they drive 55 in the far left lane, and then the next drive 80. Do they suddenly look down at the speedometer and say, "oh crap I better speed up" Doubtful

2. They don't know how to merge.

Isn't it in the driving test that you CAN'T effectively merge at 45 mph???

3. No matter how many times you drive on the highway...there's ALWAYS going to be a back up for no reason. This drives me nuts!

The Dark Knight

Saw it...loved it!

I watched Batman Begins only a few days ago, because Scott said I couldn't see this new one without seeing the first one. Christian Bale is a really good Batman. Everyone was right to play up Heath Ledger's role in this new film...he was GREAT! There were so many times that I looked at the screen to make sure it was really him, cause it sure didn't look or sound like him.

Now if only I could have done something about the kid sitting next to me who wouldn't SHUT UP the entire movie!!! Ugh. That's such a pet peeve of mine. Don't get me wrong, I love kids and I know sometimes it's hard to keep them quiet, but this kid had to be 8 or 9 years old. He should have known better...or his dad should have said something.

My husband is my hero

So I'll admit it...I'm like a toddler when it comes to bugs (think screaming, kicking, fighting temper tantrum) I've always been like that...it's just how I roll.

This morning at 5:45 am...I walked into the bathroom to get ready to take a shower. I looked in the mirror and what do I see behind me? Yep...that's right...a big reddish, hairy spider crawling on the wall behind me. Now at this point, I'm freaking. I proceed to go into our bedroom, wake up my husband and tell him that there is this huge spider on the wall preventing me from getting ready for work.

He reluctantly stumbles out of bed, puts on his glasses and proceeds to look at me with a look of either desperation or humiliation...I'm not sure.

Long story short...he kills the spider, promises me that there aren't more lurking in the bathroom to suddenly jump out at me. He then kisses me goodbye and tells me he loves me, and gladly returns to bed.

He may not remember it...but as part of our wedding vows he promised to love, cherish, and protect me from all things creepy crawly.

He's my hero. :-)

Kung Fu Panda

The reviews from other people have been good...so Scott and I decided to go see it.

Have to say...not my favorite.

It was cute and all...but not really the knee-slapping time I was promised :-)

First at 4

Monday I started my new show...First at 4.

It's now Thursday, and it's the first time I've had to actually sit down and think since this whole thing started!

The hardest part was switching back to normal people hours. That doesn't seem like it would be that hard...but it actually is! Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday I dealt with the worst heartburn I've ever had. I think it was my body asking "What the H*LL have you done?!?!!?" For 5 years I've eaten, slept, and worked like I was a night owl. Now all of a sudden I'm supposed to embrace the sunlight. It's been such a transition. On top of all that, I've been thrown into the deep end with a brand new show, one that didn't have a concrete format or a designated producer until about a week before it launched. Whew...what a few days it's been.

Our first show went pretty well. Julia (my executive producer helping me launch the show) and I were pretty stressed...just trying to get used to new deadlines and the daunting task of filling an hour long show with completely new content. On the surface I think everyone could tell that we were flying by the seat of our pants...but we sure were moving along quickly! The expectations were high...both from ourselves and from everyone in management. This is the first 4 pm show in this market. It's an adjustment for everyone. The reporters have a lot more on their plate...due to the mandate of the "whips" they are doing for the 4. The editors now have an entire hour long show to edit on top of the 1.5 hours they are responsible for from 5-6:30. The photographers now have to shoot more things in order for us to have the content we need to fill the shows. The assignment desk now has to worry about moving people around to make sure we get people where they need to go in order to get things in on time...

And I have to worry about coordinating it all.

Our ratings came back for Monday...and we managed to pull out a win over Oprah! That was huge for us on our first day...but we all knew that curiosity fueled most of the ratings. Tuesday's numbers were good too...but Wednesday not so much. It killed us that Oprah had Michael Buble on. I LOVE Buble and I know there are sooooo many people who do too.

We are working hard on the format for the show...and there are three things we really want to bring people. Everyone wants ways to save money. We really want to go in-depth on some good stories. We also want to bring inspiring stories. If you are from Central Ohio and you have an idea on this...please let me know! I'd love to hear from you.

As for now...I'm gonna keep plugging along and working hard to prove that I deserve this great opportunity I've been given!!!

Murder Mystery

We've had our first casualty. Call out the homicide squad, I think our fish were murdered! :-)

Our fish tank has been up for about 4 or 5 months. We took all of the precautions...putting plants in first and then waiting weeks before adding fish...not over-feeding them and we waited weeks in between adding new kinds of fish.

It's a 20 gallon tank, and has live plants in it. (which have been doing well so far) We first started out with 4 lemon tetras. (they are the grayish ones in the picture) They seemed to get along pretty well, and to this day all 4 are still in the tank. About a month and a half ago we decided to get more fish. We settle on serpae tetras. (the red ones in the tank) We wanted 4 but somehow the guy at the store gave us one more than we paid for. Oh well...in to the tank they went. On this trip we also got 3 catfish (or suckerfish as I like to call them...much to my husbands dismay). They have all done really well and like the lemons, they are all currently with us.

This weekend we decided to go and get the final 4 fish for our tank. You can have up to 20 fish in this size tank, but we had made up our minds that 16 would do just fine. We had decided on cardinal tetras, which aren't the most hearty of fish to begin with, but they are pretty with a blue metallic stripe on their middle section. There was a reason we chose these last...because we knew if we started with them then we probably wouldn't have them too long. Turns out we were right to wait...perhaps we should've waited a little longer. Saturday Scott and I went to Aquarium Adventure to pick up our new fish. They made the short drive home with us and quickly went floating in their bag in the tank. Out of the 4 fish, we had one that was really small, so we figured that we would probably lose that one.

Sunday morning we discovered that we only had 3 of the cardinals left. One was floating on the surface. Ok...no big deal...it's only $4 lost.

Sunday night...only 2 cardinals left. The mystery here...no fish floating on the top. I think he was murdered! His body has still not been found...and now I'm convinced that our other fish have turned into piranhas.

Monday morning...yep...you guessed it. Only 1 cardinal left. At this point I felt like the count Dracula from Sesame Street. 4 cardinals...aaa aaa aaaa....3 cardinals left...aaa aaa aaaa...2 cardinals (you get the idea)

This latest casualty was found floating at the bottom of the tank. I think he was murdered too.

Now we only have 1 cardinal left. I'm thinking it's going to stay that way...unless our other fish get hungry overnight!

Moods

I've had a range of emotions the past few days...

As you may or may not know...this week my station went through what many around the country have/will or already have gone through. Layoffs. I can say that I survived what I think is the first and only round, but you never know. One of my fellow producers wasn't so lucky. I feel so bad for her, because it was such a surprise and the station basically dropped a bombshell on her. I can't imagine how I'd be able to pick myself up from something like that. It hurts too because we have become close the last year, working side by side overnight. She really helped me to focus on the big picture in this crazy business, and gave me the strength to deal with some other issues I've had with co-workers (really one in particular...but that person will go unnamed) It was such a shock to learn that she was one of 11% of the company to lose their jobs.

Now the whole landscape at work has changed. So many people don't know what to think. We are all upset that so many people had to go, and yet we're all fearful that we're next. To top it all off, we have been working hard to launch our downtown studio, which will be on the air at 5 am come Tuesday. The following week we will be launching a 4 pm show...something I've made no secret of that I want...but I'm not sure if they'll consider me for it. None of us know who will be doing it. All of the producers will undoubtedly have some changes in schedule/work load etc. I just hope that whatever happens will be a step in the right direction for me, not backwards. Time will tell....

In my personal life...things are going well. Scott and I are working through schedule differences, and finally managed to have dinner with two of my friends from work. It's nice to meet up with new people...especially ones who are as smart, funny and interesting as our dinner guests were!

I finally have a long weekend....thanks to the Memorial Day holiday on Monday. Days off are hard to come by and I intend to fully take advantage of my time at home. I think some scrapbooking is in order...and I bet Scott and I will head to the miniature golf course for what is sure to be a fun but very competitive game of golf. :-)

Happy Memorial Day to everyone...and a big thanks to those who have served or are serving our country! We owe you big time.

Isn't he cute??!?!?

Okay he is so adorable!
I want to take him home. Nevermind the fact that he could probably kill me when he is about 6 months old.

Update

No, I didn't take an extended leave on vacation...I am back home! :-)

I haven't updated because it's been a busy two weeks, but I'm happy that it's busy. I really enjoy this time of year, there are always so many things to attend & celebrate. There's always a graduation or wedding to go to. My mom's, & brother's birthdays are in May, plus Mother's Day and throw in a baby shower or bridal shower and I'm good to go. I've got pretty much all of that on my calendar.

First...vacation. It was so nice to be in Florida. Early in the week it was "cold", you know, high temps ONLY in the 70's. Ha! The Floridians had their jackets on while Scott and I were celebrating how warm it was. As the week went on it progressively got hotter. We went to the Tampa Zoo, Florida Aquarium and ate SOOOO much great seafood all week. I really didn't care what we did because 1) I was on vacation and away from work and 2) I was spending 8 whole days with my husband. We went to the beach, and I proceeded to get really burnt like usual. (I was reminded why vampires don't usually go out in the sun) The restaurants we went to were perfect. I had lots of tuna, salmon, and shrimp. I even tried gator and oysters! (both were good and the gator actually tasted like chicken) We had dinner outside most nights, either at a restaurant or on the balcony at the condo. I even let my husband win at mini-golf. (though he would say differently...) We played tons of games of Uno. [I know...I know...we are lame but it's a fun game!!] Overall it was a great time and a much needed week away from all the stress we both have at work.

Since we got back we've been going non stop. I worked on the noon show for 3 days when we got back (which was a great change...I love being awake during the day) and then sweeps started. This past weekend my mom & sister came to town and we went to a bridal shower for a friend of ours. She is getting married at the Four Seasons (where our reception was) in June and we are so excited for her!! The shower was great, it was at Bravo! and the food was spectacular. After that we went shopping at Kohl's and my mom and I helped my sister spend her money. She got some really cute summer clothes. We also went to the mall where Steph bought some more stuff and even found a birthday present for Mom! Between what Stephanie and I bought for mom she got a ton of new clothes for her birthday. Mom, Scott and I went to Chilli's for dinner and had a great time. We then went back to the apartment to play Uno again...which is fun when you have been drinking.

This coming weekend is busy as well. I'm planning on going to my friend Angie's baby shower on Saturday...I can't wait for her to see what I got her...I think she'll really like it. Then we are picking up Scott's grandparents at the airport and they are staying with us on Saturday night. Sunday we are all going to Dayton to celebrate with my brother-in-law who is graduating with honors from the University of Dayton!!

The next few weeks will be trying...we are launching our downtown studio at the end of May so I have plenty of rehearsals to attend. That means a lack of sleep each week as the only time they can do the rehearsals is around 10 am. Too bad I go to bed at 9. They won't ever understand just how much that screws me up...nor do I think they care.

Oh well...such is the life.

Yippeeee

I'm officially on vacation!!

Heading to FL later this morning...be back on the 20th.

I'll update on my trip when I get back.

Cute Dogs

So on Saturday I took my brother-in-laws dog (Summit) to meet my parents dog (Brody) and then my grandparents dog (Chloe) was there too! It was a crazy day but they are all so cute so I of course had to pull out the camera. (God help me when I have kids...I'll have a camera permanently attached to my hand)

Feeling a little better

I think I've gotten down to the last bit of my cold. I tell you what...I don't get sick often but when I do it's usually pretty bad! At least I got it out of the way before we leave for vacation.

Speaking of vacation---We leave on Friday!!!!!!!! (can you tell I'm excited) 9 days in Florida. No work...no stupid meetings to go to in the middle of the day...and the only stress we'll have is what kind of seafood to have for dinner :-) I know we went on a vacation 6 months ago, but I have barely had any days off since then, and the days I have been working it's been pretty stressful.

The rest of April and May should be pretty fun. I am working on the noon show for 3 days while a co-worker is on vacation. That is a lot of fun to do only because I get a few more days off the vampire shift. Now if I could only find a permanent way to get off of that shift....

That's all I really have for today. It's Monday so I'm a little slow on the uptake.

Sick

I'm sicker than a dog right now...

The cold medicine isn't working...
The chicken soup isn't working...
The millions of times I've blown my nose isn't working....

I just want to crawl into bed and sleep till vacation!

(I can thank my husband for giving me such an awful cold)

Anniversary

Okay...so I realize it's not that big of an accomplishment...but my husband and I have officially made it 5 months together as husband and wife. I can't believe it's been 5 months already since the wedding, it seems like yesterday.

Whoohoo...

(okay, it's silly I know...but I feel like celebrating)

No focus

Ever get to the end of the week and you just don't have the focus you need to? That's exactly how I feel today.

Even the big kids can play in the snow

Columbus gets dumped on with tons of snow in about 24 hours. We ended up with about 11 inches at our house. After shoveling the sidewalk and driveway (for the second time in 2 days) my husband decided he wanted to make snow angels...just for fun. Proving that even the big kids can enjoy their "snow day"

Timing is everything...

Thank God that for once this winter the snow hits on a weekend.

I am blissfully enjoying my "snow day" at home with my husband. :-)

Silent time you have early in the morning makes you think too much

There is such a divide between the days I want to be completely quiet and the days that I crave interaction with other people. This morning, while I sit typing at my computer, it's completely silent upstairs. (only because I left our bedroom where my husband was snoring so loud it woke me up) It's nice to get a few moments to collect my thoughts after what has been a really stressful month.

It's interesting to me that I spent so many days in February wishing that time would pass more quickly and yet now I'm sitting here thinking "oh my gosh...it's March already". Snow can do that to you I guess. So can having vampire hours. :-)

I still make a list every Thursday night of the things I'd like to accomplish over the weekend, which is the only time I truly feel that I have more than 10 minutes to do something for myself. This week's list consisted mostly of shopping and scrapbooking, and as of this moment I've yet to do either. Yesterday was such a waste for me. I spent too long vegging in the morning trying to settle down from a busy day, that I in turn slept much longer than I should have. Then I was on the phone for awhile (which was time well spent) and all of a sudden Scott was home and it was time to make dinner.

I have however enjoyed my time so far this week watching our new TV. Scott decided to buy a 40" flat screen HDTV. It's a nice TV and I think he's pretty happy with it. I won't get in to the debate over whether or not we have a dying need for a new TV...that's a battle I don't think I'll ever win.

I think we are at that akward stage where enough time has passed since the wedding that many don't think of us as newlyweds anymore. :-) It reminds me of the summer between 8th grade and high school. No longer are you a middle school student, but you can't honestly call yourself a high school student either. Obviously we aren't going to call ourselves single because that's not the case...but after the wedding most people are bored with the fact that you are just 'married'. I'm sure it's a stage that will be here until people start asking whether or not we're going to have kids. (which, if you are wondering, we plan on it...but no timetable has been set)

Today I have the feeling like I want to accomplish so much, yet few things will be finished. Oh well. Sometimes a weekend where there's nothing to do is nice.

Pillar of Strength

I always try to be the person others look to when they need guidance, help, understanding, hope etc.

But lately I feel like the pillar of strength that I have been holding up is about to fall over. My emotions have been all over the place and I feel like they are out of control.

There are so many things I'm passionate about and I think that those things get the better of me when I know they shouldn't.

Passion is what I have, Compassion is what I crave....

The joy of working a morning shift when there are school delays

School delays.

They used to be such a great thing to hear. Of course, that was when I was in school.

Now I dread it.

It means more work and a pretty stressful day for me. It doesn't matter whether there are 3 or 300. No matter how on top of things I think I am, I always feel like they kick my butt every time.

So for all of you who don't have to go to school...congratulations. But forgive me if I don't jump up and down with excitement.

Boy...that was a depressing post wasn't it? :-) Maybe after I get some sleep I will feel better.

Cause hey---IT'S FRIDAY!!!!

Dog sitting

Spent the weekend with a four legged furry friend... :-) Summit joined us while my in-laws were in FL. We had a good time...even when she woke us up at 6 am to go outside.
I love having dogs around...and I know it was in a small way a practice for when we have kids. (which is still a ways off)
Here are some photos I took of her. She just laid there like it was her job.

Doesn't it go by in a blink...

Wow...it's already the 24th of January. Where has the time gone? It has been so frantic at work lately that I haven't had a minute to think to myself.

I'm currently trying to finish up a video for my parents & in-laws. I should have had it done for the wedding, but...well...time just got away from me there too. They are all coming over for dinner at the end of Feb. so I have about 4 weeks to finish it.

Good news...my photographer says that some of our albums are done! :-) I hope we can pick them up this weekend because I'm really excited to see the pictures. I can't believe we've been married for more than 3 months now.

Not much else to report...other than we are dog-sitting this weekend. That should be a lot of fun! I love having a dog around, I just wish it wasn't so expensive to have one in our apartment complex.

Time passes and life happens

I got this in an email from my mom...it's pretty good!

Time passes.

Life happens.

Distance separates.

Children grow up.

Jobs come and go.

Love waxes and wanes.

Men don't do what they're supposed to do.

Hearts break.

Parents die.

Colleagues forget favors.

Careers end.

BUT...

Sisters are there,

no matter how much time and how

many miles are between you.

A girl friend is never farther away

than needing her can reach.

When you have to walk that lonesome valley and you

have to walk it by yourself, the women in your life

will be on the valley's rim, cheering you on,

praying for you, pulling for you, intervening on

your behalf, and waiting with open arms at the valley's end.

Sometimes, they will even break the rules and walk

beside you...Or come in and carry you out.

Girlfriends, daughters, granddaughters,

daughters-in-law, sisters, sisters-in-law, Mothers,

Grandmothers, aunties, nieces, cousins, and extended

family, all bless our life!

The world wouldn't be the same without women, and

neither would I. When we began this adventure called

womanhood, we had no idea of the incredible joys or

sorrows that lay ahead. Nor did we know how much we

would need each other.

Every day, we need each other still.

Ranting...

I must get some pet peeves off my chest because if I share vocally right now I'm probably going to regret it.

1. Manners:
I realize not everyone was raised by Emily Post standards, but what has our society come to that so many people have given up or forgotten what little manners they were actually taught?
Here are some examples: (and these are all taken from what I've seen & heard from ADULTS in my own personal experience)
a) Slurping beverages loud enough for others to hear. Um hello...are you 4 years old?? Wait...4 year olds don't even do that cause they drink out of sippy cups.
b) Cleaning out his/her ears with a finger, then wiping whatever comes out on something other than a tissue. EEEW! If you are intent on doing this, then at least have the decency to go to the bathroom so the rest of us don't have to see exactly what comes out of your eardrum.
and my personal favorite:
c) Biting and or cutting fingernails in the office. There is nothing that makes me cringe more than hearing the sound of a fingernail clipper or even teeth grind on a fingernail. It's almost like a game, see how far the cut nail will fly...and which unfortunate person's desk it will land on. (not to mention will the person who did it actually pick it up)

I could go on and on and on and on....

2. Clothes.
This goes to the people (mostly women) who have it in their head that they are a size 6 when CLEARLY they should at least triple or quadruple that number. Now I'm not bashing people who have packed on a few too many pounds...cause God knows I could stand to lose a ton. But how can you honestly buy clothes that are too tight? Do you not know that when you stand up your back side is hanging out for the world to see because your shirt isn't long enough???
Now I know that many people go through phases where they seem to wear things that are either out of style or clearly not for their body type (I know cause I've done it)...but I ALWAYS make sure that my shirt is long enough to cover the ugly fat I have around my middle. I just wish other people would do the same.

3. Jealousy.
The green eyed monster hits all of us from time to time, so no one is immune to it's powers. But come on...when you are constantly worrying about whether other people got more than you did...I say GROW UP!

4. Being Nosy.
Who doesn't love gossip from time to time. I admit that I often fall into the trap of trying to know the inside scoop on other people. But there is a difference between that and purposely listening to other people's conversations. Not to mention the people who listen to other conversations and then interrupt the people who are talking. I can't stand people who just wait to get their word in...even though it has nothing to do with you.

Okay...that's enough for now...I'll definitely have more for later.

Are we surprised?

Okay, Ohio State made it to the BCS Championship again. And they lost. Are we surprised?

I have to say not really.

Now I had hope that they could win but I had to be realistic. Watching the game I just didn't see it. They started strong but couldn't keep the pace.

Oh well...there's always next season right?

It's almost Game Day!

Myspace Backgrounds - Ohio State Buckeyes

Here's hoping the city of Columbus behaves itself on game day so I can have a quiet day at work!! (who am I kidding...it's never quiet when the Buckeyes are involved)

2008 Resolutions

I'm not normally the kind of person to create resolutions for the new year...but for some reason I feel like I need some to guide me through 2008.

Reduce stress
Easier said than done I realize, but there are so many times when I am the one to put more stress on myself.

Spend more time with my husband
Once again, another one that is easier said than done. We really need to work on this one as a couple. I think we need to cross the bridge into OUR life together, instead of being two people from two different families.

Take better care of myself
I think everyone can add this to his or her list every year. Of course I'd like to lose weight. I'd also like to have better posture, eat better food and stop being so tired all of the time. (a new schedule at work would help)

Avoid "toxic" co-workers
You know the ones I'm talking about! They are the ones who annoy the living sh*t out of you no matter how many times you tell them to leave you alone. There are a few that I have to deal with on a regular basis and I need to just tune them out so I can do my job the best I can. I've always heard that you spend the majority of your life at work, so why stress yourself out by letting these toxic co-workers affect you?? I say no!

Reconnect with friends
I have let so many friendships go over the years, some I should have, while others I should have fought harder to keep.

That should be enough for now...I'll reassess in the middle of the year to see how things are going.
